History

The first recorded rowing race in Australia was between four oared gigs from English ships on Sydney Harbour in 1805. While the first regatta was in Melbourne in the year 1841, it was not until 1860 in Brisbane that annual rowing competition started in Queensland.

Rowing clubs were established in Brisbane in the 1860s however Commercial Rowing Club is the oldest surviving rowing club in Queensland founded in 1877. Rowing in Rockhampton started in 1863, Maryborough started in 1877, Bundaberg started in the 1890s and now rowing is established in over 15 regional centres. The Queensland Rowing Association was formed in 1899 to “uphold the interest and honour of amateurs” thus providing a major stimulus for the sport. We now all look forward to the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane.
